Flagship course
Metric Charter Studio
Eight weeks, one contested KPI, a written charter you can put in front of finance. Remote with two optional days in Kennett. This page describes the programme; it does not take payment.
What you walk out with
- A named owner and a named steward who are not the same person.
- Numerator, denominator, window, and exclusions written in English first, SQL second.
- A freeze rule and an addendum template for mid-cycle changes.
- A 45-minute review agenda that records dissent instead of burying it.
You must bring a real metric from your organisation. Synthetic case studies are not accepted after week two.
Modules
Inventory without theatre
Map every tile that claims to measure the same behaviour. We kill duplicates on paper before anyone opens a BI tool.
Ownership that can be audited
Owner versus steward versus consumer. Joint ownership is allowed only with a written escalation path.
Definitions that survive finance
English first. Event names second. We practice reading a definition aloud to someone who has never seen the warehouse.
Windows, lags, and honest delay
Why a 14-day activation window is a policy, not a discovery. How to label incomplete periods.
Exception logs
Staff accounts, refunds, migrations, and the one-off “just this quarter” request. How to keep a public list.
The freeze and the addendum
What may change mid-cycle and what must wait. You draft the addendum your CPO will actually sign.
Review Room Practice
Live 45-minute rooms. You chair once. You take minutes once. Silence is recorded as dissent, not agreement.
Handover and the kill list
Who maintains the charter after you leave the cohort. Which tiles are retired with a date, not a hope.
Instructor
Helen Crowe
Helen spent twelve years in product operations for UK marketplaces and a payments firm, mostly arguing about activation. She now teaches charter writing at Signal Layerhub and still sits as a steward on two alumni dashboards. She will not pick your north star for you.
Informational fees
Metric Charter Studio is listed at £1,840 per seat for the public remote cohort, or £9,600 for an in-house group of up to eight. Kennett days are included if you travel; we do not book hotels. See programme fees for other seats. No checkout on this site.
A limitation you should know
This course will not repair a broken event taxonomy. If your product analytics stream still names the same click three ways, charter work stalls in week three. We will say so early. Hire instrumentation help first, then return.
FAQ
Do I need SQL?
Enough to read a query, not enough to rewrite a warehouse. Analysts in the room are welcome; PMs without SQL have completed the course by pairing with a steward.
Can two people from one company share a metric?
Yes. We prefer an owner and a steward from the same organisation. We do not accept three competing “owners” after week one.
Is there a certificate?
A letter confirming attendance and that your charter was reviewed in class. It is not an accredited qualification.
What if our KPI is genuinely a north star?
Then write it as a charter anyway. North-star language does not exempt you from a freeze rule. If you refuse to name exclusions, you will struggle here — that is a real limitation of the method, not a sales hedge.
From the same cohort
Helen made us read the activation definition to our CFO on a call. Mortifying. The addendum template is now in our wiki. I still think eight weeks is long for people who already “know metrics.”
4 stars. The exception log stopped our marketplace team from quietly dropping refunded orders out of the numerator.
